Rest in Peace Michael Jackson

It was hard to choose which MJ picture to choose, so I went with something in the middle. I know my timing is late, but here are some twits I said when hearing about his passing. This is what the impact he had on me as a child.

Thanks MJ for saving me for those times when I couldn't get the party started.

Props to my sister, who knew the whole "Thriller" dance, AND the whole "Beat It" dance. She would even do the knife fight by herself, lol

Who remembers MJ gettin punked in the project hallway by Wesley Snipes in the 'BAD' video? MJ tryin to be Hood, lol

Who remembers when 'Black or White' extended video premiered Sun night Primetime, and parents were upset at the 'Excessive Crotch Grabbing'?

Who remembers the jacket w/ 27 Zippers? they came in Black or Red. Tory Smith in my 2nd grade class had one.

MJ had the lil baby pony tail in "The Way you Make me Feel" Vid. He was STYLIN! (that girl was fly too)

in the "Remember the Time" video..when he spun around, and turned into sand?! My mind blew, forreal!

ok, Show of hands...Who walked home from school and wanted the concrete slabs of side walk to light up!? *hand raised*

fav MJ Vid: Smooth Criminal. He Crushed the que ball and blew it in that dudes face, and then the TILT? c'mon...no one was fukin w/ that

I can say the Michael Jackson we all knew and loved has been gone for a while, but the impact on music will be recognized forever

Holdin down the block...

Beats, Rhymes, & Life: 5 Years Strong

For those who don't know, I've been doing volunteer work with my good friends Non-Profit organization Beats, Rhymes, and Life based in Oakland, Ca. Beats, Rhymes, and Life (BRL) has been gaining a lot of momentum over the past few years, working with under-served youth and students in the community, providing Hip Hop, more specifically Rap, as a therapeutic outlet and building community and mental health through music. You can find out everything you want to know at www.beatsrhymesandlife.org, but I'm going to talk about the program in my own words.

When the media combines the words 'Oakland', 'Schools', and 'Youth' are mentioned in the same sentence, there's usually not a of good that comes out of it. During these tough financial times, budget cutbacks are effecting public schools more than ever, and with senseless violence plaguing cities across the country, todays youth is in a state of crisis. Organizations like Beats, Rhymes, and Life are essential to building strength, community, and comradary amongst the youth, and it's sad to say that relying on financial support from the state is an almost impossible task, so we NEED help from our community.

The Youth in this semester's BRL group are the best crop we've ever had. Only a few words that can describe these kids are Talented, Determined, and Poetic. So much of today's Hip Hop lacks substance and meaning, but these students open doors for observers and listeners to see that they ARE the future in Hip Hop, and they DO love the music. I see my young self in them.
There are nearly a dozen students in the group, and in 6 months time, they've manage to complete an album with 18 original songs, perform at numerous functions, and most importantly, work together effectively and professionally.

On Friday, June 26, we celebrate the 5 year anniversary of BRL with a live performance by the youth, DJ's, Award Ceremonies, Food, and much more. We want people to know that positive energy exist in Oakland's youth.

Here's the promo for the event on June 26th

Click Here to see photos from their last performance.
Big shout out to Chunny at vaindeer.com for making that happen.

Download a sampler from the BRL compilation "Tha Grand Entrance" HERE. Shout out to all the people who made this project happen, especially the producers who made this project as successful as it was.

Ed Gordon interviews Spike Lee

*On this weekend’s "Our World with Black Enterprise," director Spike Lee sits down with host Ed Gordon for a no holds barred interview rife with the artist’s trademark frankness.
Taped live at the 14th annual Black Enterprise Entrepreneurs Conference, Lee discusses his concern about the image of blacks in the media, and weighs in with his thoughts on contemporaries John Singleton and Tyler Perry. [See details below.]

"Our World with Black Enterprise" will air its exclusive interview with Spike Lee on Saturday, May 30, and Sunday, May 31 on syndicated stations across the country.

Highlights include:

On his films being labeled “controversial”:

I think journalists are lazy—how do you define people with one word? The subject matters we’ve done in my films—I don’t think they are controversial. I don’t think racism is controversial, it’s thought provoking. If you look at how we dealt with that in Do The Right Thing, Jungle Fever, Malcolm X [etc.]. I don’t think School Daze was controversial. We looked at what I feel are the superficial differences that keep us from being a more unified people. Superficial differences based on skin complexion, hair texture, class—that type of stuff. That’s not controversial.

On stereotypical images of blacks in the media:

Each artist should be allowed to pursue their artistic endeavors but I still think there is a lot of stuff out today that is “coonery” and buffoonery. I know it’s making a lot of money and breaking records, but we can do better. … I am a huge basketball fan, and when I watch the games on TNT, I see these two ads for these two shows (Tyler Perry’s "Meet the Browns" and "House of Payne") and I am scratching my head. … We got a black president and we going back to Mantan Moreland and Sleep ‘n’ Eat?

On Tyler Perry and what the black consumer (really) wants to see:

We’ve had this discussion back and forth. When John Singleton [made Boyz in the Hood], people came out to see it. But when he did Rosewood, nobody showed up. So a lot of this is on us! You vote with your pocketbook, your wallet. You vote with your time sitting in front of the idiot box, and [Tyler Perry] has a huge audience. We shouldn’t think that Tyler Perry is going to make the same film that I am going to make, or that John Singleton or my cousin Malcolm Lee [would make]. As African Americans, we’re not one monolithic group so there is room for all of that. But at the same time, for me, the imaging is troubling and it harkens back to Amos n’ Andy.

On the election of a black President:

It was witnessing history. It was like being alive when Jackie Robinson integrated baseball, when Joe Louis knocked out (Max) Schmeling—it was like that. When Jackie Robinson played for the Dodgers, every African American in this country was praying for him. When Joe Louis fought and won, black communities—in Detroit, Harlem, Chicago—black communities from all over the world would come out of the house after listening to Joe knock out those guys on the radio … and celebrate. With [President Obama’s victory] it was the same thing!

Benifit for Rascue

Bay Area ambassador and long time friend Rascue is in need of a transplant, and this is a HUGE benefit to help his cause. All proceeds go to him, and this show has all of SF involved!

Check out this lineup, and come through to support!

Kanye West - Paranoid (alternate version)

I'm not feeling the other version that has that 'Thriller' look to it, this one has much more artistic merit. I like the fact that Kanye isn't in this video as much, and I like how there's no text. It's also nice to see Rhianna in such a beautiful light, since the last images most people seem to remember was her leaked domestic violence photo. The thing I like most is the timing...something that Kanye and his camp (i guess you can call it a camp) does extremely well, even though he was a little late on the autotune.

Get at me if you want the link to download this.

Alice Coltrane - Universal Consciousness

This is for my Abstract Jazz head, which doesn't really include myself, but this one definitely has some cool sounds. I don't know Alice nearly as well as I know John, and honestly, I don't know If you can really compare the two, because Alice seems to be a little more freeform, while John is a little more traditional...but what the hell do I know. lol Im sure Jazz critics are screaming, but with the vast world of Jazz, knowing a lot is still not knowing much at all. Hope yall appreciate this work done by Mrs. Coltrane.

Check this one out, you won't be disappointed.

Wale - Chillin (Video)

I consider my self a big Wale supporter...I think he does a good job of puttin himself out there with out flooding the market, he's one of the most lyrically talented cats out right now, and he's got that desirable 'swag' that seems to be so coveted nowadays. ANYway, I'm gonna be real with you...I thought this song was pretty wack when it came out, but it definitely grew on me. The vid is fresh, and I uploaded the joint for your personal enjoyment. o yeah, also features what appears to be the ghost of Lady Gaga

I'm sorry for doubting you Wale, I truly am. lol
