Remembering Dilla

I spent a good amount of time looking for any and every Dilla picture I could find online. Respect to all the photographers and artists that contributed.

Dilla's Estate

There has been a lot of controversy surrounding Dilla involving his works, copyrights, and a boatload of other things after his passing. Here are the links from two L.A. Weekly articles describing the situation, and they're from Dilla's myspace blog, so you have to have a myspace account to view them

Phat Kat & Jay Dee: Dedication to the Suckas

Photobucket

This is one of my favorite 12" of all time....quentissential Phat Kat and Jay Dee. I wouldn't say that Dilla ever had a prime, but this is Dilla at his best. Smooth, but rugged...head nod beats, flipped samples, ill drums, beats and rhymes. (not sure if my description does it justice) ALSO what makes this 12" especially noteworthy is that Dilla does the cuts, which solidifies "Dedication to the Suckas" as a classic. I don't need any more adjectives, all I'm sayin is if you download 1 thing on the blog, let this be it.

LeBron Guarantee

ok, so LeBron guarantees that the USA will win the Gold Medal in the Beijing Olympics. 1st of all, I, nor the NBA players selected, or should I say optioned to go to the Olympics this summer are making it seem like winning Gold in Beijing is a life linfg ambition, but at the same time, no one is going into the tournament thinking they're gonna loose. Lemme expand on that. NO player in ANY sport goes into any game thinking they're gonna lose. If you go into a game thinking you're gonna win, which any player on any level does, you are guaranteeing victory. I don't understand why people, ie. the media, more specifically ESPN, puts soo much emphasis on a guaranteed victory. 99% of the time its taken out of context, and 100% of the time it's on the mind of the players.
PLEASE...let's stop making a big deal about players guaranteeing victory, because like Herm Edwards says..HELLO! you Play, to win, the Game!

Barack Obama in Berlin

Sen. Barack Obama, standing before a cheering crowd of more than 200,000 in Berlin - many waving American flags - Thursday delivered an historic political address to a worldwide audience, telling Europeans that "there is no challenge too great for a world that stands as one " against terrorism and for peace.

it's not Crack it's CRASS!! C.R.A.C Knuckles is Blu and Ta'Raach

Everyone's always complainin.."how come no one is on some original shit" or "man, no one is on that next shit" (both of which are said in a whiny voice). Well, if you haven't heard about Blu & Ta'Raach and the C.R.A.C Knuckles album, then your complainin stops now! Just like most songs that end up in the rotation, this one definitely had to grow on me. Cop the album, and peep the video!
If you haven't heard any of these artists previous works, trust me...they're the real deal.

Rick Ross as a Correctional Officer

I'm definitely not one to keep up with the tabloids, but sometimes I catch myself reading the news headlines from hiphopdx.com from my own blog! This one with Rick Ross as a Correctional Officer had me ROLLIN!

Photobucket

As for Rick Ross being exposed, I could care less. Of course, he denies it and states that his life is "100% real" (in which case he should be behind bars for making a half a mil last year movin weight, as he proclaimed in that T-Pain joint). But fuck it..if you used to have a job as a correctional officer, thats coo man. His Street cred is down the drain, but all these cats are actors and entertainers to some degree.

But ANYWAY...who the fuck knows what he looks like behind that beard anyway? This pic could be of any brotha, plus it looks circa 1970, AND it looks like its in Jamaica, or Zaire or somethin. Its definitely got a Bob Marley, or Fela look to it.

Like i said. Its not like I keep up with this tabloid bs....

Nas...one of the best who ever did it.

Photobucket

I know yall are hyped about the new Nas album (it's an instant classic imo), but for some strange reason (political overtones throughout the album), It's not getting good reviews. I think the cats that still live in the early 90's Hip Hop realm need to realize that he's not Nasty Nas anymore, and that Illmatic will always be one of a kind. But my man Nas focuses on his progression, always thinkin about the next step. The Untitled album is gonna be one of the best albums of the year, pls cop that by any means necessary!

To honor Nas, I've uploaded some tracks he has done over the years that weren't on any of his albums. These are from the personal library, so don't say I never gave you nothin! Enjoy.

Gangs Infiltrate Sports!

The NFL is known as the "No Fun League", but now they're becoming the "Gang Task Force Prevention League" or the "Assumption that all off field affiliations are gang related" league, "Black players make a hand gesture, therefore it's gang related" league...and believe me, it DOES have to do with race.

Here's an article from espn.com:

The NFL has hired experts to study game footage to determine whether players are displaying street-gang hand signals as part of their on-field celebrations, the Los Angeles Times reports.

"There have been some suspected things we've seen," said Milt Ahlerich, the league's vice president of security, according to the Times' report. "When we see it, we quietly jump on it immediately, directly with the team and the player or employee involved to cease and desist. Period."

There have been some suspected things we've seen. When we see it, we quietly jump on it immediately, directly with the team and the player or employee involved to cease and desist. Period.
-- Milt Ahlerich, NFL VP of security
Gang signs in pro sports gained a higher profile during the NBA playoffs, when Boston Celtics captain Paul Pierce was fined $25,000 for making "menacing gestures" toward the Atlanta Hawks' bench during a game.

Pierce was contrite at the time, saying in a statement "I 100 percent do not in any way promote gang violence or anything close to it. I am sorry if it was misinterpreted that way."

"We were always suspicious that [gang-related hand signals] might be happening," said Mike Pereira, the NFL's vice president of officiating, according to the report. "But the Paul Pierce thing is what brought it to light. When he was fined … that's when we said we need to take a look at it and see if we need to be aware of it."

Ahlerich said he does not believe the problem is widespread, but added that the league has spoken to some players -- whom he declined to identify -- about their use of hand signals, according to the report.

First-year players were counseled on gangs at the league's recent rookie symposium, and a video on the dangers of gangs was required viewing for every player in the NFL last year, according to the report.

But differentiating between a gang sign and something less menacing can involve some guesswork, according to at least one player.

"Guys come from all over the country, and who knows what they're really doing?" Jacksonville Jaguars receiver Dennis Northcutt said, according to the Times' report. "People have got signs for their kids, signs for their fraternities. How do you differentiate who's really throwing up gang signs?

"This is a gang sign," he added, touching his index finger to his thumb to form a squished version of the hand sign for OK. "But at the same time, it's a sign for a personnel group."

Barack Obama and The New Yorker

sat•ire (noun) 1a. A literary work in which human vice or folly is attacked through irony, derision, or wit. b. The branch of literature constituting such works. See synonyms at caricature. 2. Irony, sarcasm, or caustic wit used to attack or expose folly, vice, or stupidity.

car·i·ca·ture (noun)1a. A representation, especially pictorial or literary, in which the subject's distinctive features or peculiarities are deliberately exaggerated to produce a comic or grotesque effect. b. The art of creating such representations. 2. A grotesque imitation or misrepresentation

Believe it or not, there ARE people that have, and continue to see Barack Obama in this light, solely because of his name, his ethnicity (and his acceptance of it) and his beliefs.

thank you to all the folks that came out to our monthly event at Poleng Lounge in San Francisco!

Unfortunately there was some drama at the end, which I feel is most unfortunate because each fight at a Hip Hop club gives club owners one more reason why not to have Hip Hop at the club. Just like in Kindergarten, it only takes a few people to ruin it for everyone.

Tiger Stadium (1912-2008)

Photobucket

I was watching sportscenter last night, and they mentioned for about 10
seconds the demolition of the historic Tiger Stadium. This may not be a
big deal to most since the Tigers haven't played there for almost 10
years, but the history of the ballpark cannot be ignored. Unfortunately,
with the way major league sports franchises operate, its only a matter
of time before they put a wrecking ball to Fenway or Wrigley to
accommodate corporate luxury suites, and when that happens, (and it
will if the price is right) I'm sure it won't be a blip in the sports news.

I know the Tigers aren't as lovable as baseball fans across the country
as the Yanks, Cubs, or Sox, but this stadium which was built in 1912 is
a historical monument. With the final year of the Yankees playing at
Yankee Stadium, the media coverage has been more than plenty, and
necessary. I'm not sure if there has been a professional arena that has
seen what Yankee Stadium has seen, but the history of Tiger Stadium
cannot be overlooked. The city of Detroit has given birth to so many
people, styles, and cultures in its history, and since 1912, Tiger
Stadium has stood on Trumbull and Michigan Ave. (I've also read that
baseball has been played on the site since 1896, 5 years before the
Tigers existed)

Interesting Fact: This stadium opened the same day as the legendary
Fenway park, and only 5 days after the Titanic sank.
